Introduction

Herman Melville's novel, Moby-Dick, does not only demonstrates the enlightening knowledge and philosophy of its author, but also shows the influence of other writers on his work, especially William Shakespeare and Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was Melville's hidden agenda to produce an American identity for the American literature and to prove that FE American writers can compete with the dominant British writers. Therefore, the journey of the Pequod is actually, a journey of self-fulfillment and identity formation by Melville, from this point stems the idea of my paper, because if we look at the novel Moby-Dick we can see numerous of references to Shakespeare's tragic heroes. In a different perspective, Ahab is referred at as a transcendentalist heru, therefore in this paper I would like to discuss the character of Captain Ahab and the events of the novel in light of these two perspectives Therefore the thesis will be about tab hetween the Emersonian Transcendentalist Hero and The Shakespearian Tragic Hero
